Miscellaneous antiques
Although predominantly dating from between 1650 and 1850, we do from time to time stretch this a little further, and in this category we have pieces of glassware, porcelain, fabrics, metalware, canterburies, trays, books and other interesting items which do not correspond with our other categories.
Charles II Oak, Snakewood, Yewwood and Ebony Mule Chest
No: 10365
A particularly sophisticated mid 17th.Century Oak Mule Chest or Coffer with Drawer, the hinged plank top above a frieze with appliques, yewwood mouldings, ebony panels and three geometrically applied panels above three Snakewood veneered cushion moulded panels having stylised ebonised quatrefoil guilloche centres seperated by stiles with further applied mouldings and ebony panels above a pea and bean moulding, the conforming base drawer above a moulded edge and the whole raised on stiles. This piece has panelled ends and is in two sections.
Note: Larger pieces at this time were often made in two or more parts for ease of transportation and moving within a home. Often referred to as Country Furniture, pieces of this nature were not made by estate joiners but would have been made in the major towns and cities. The degree of complexity and the use of rare timbers like yewwood and exotic woods like snakewood would have made this an expensive "showpiece" when it was first made and strongly suggests it would been made for an important household.

Lindsay Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, Plates 105 & 106 & Colour Plates: 16 & 17.
Provenance: Lady Dunphie, Roundhill Grange, Charlton Musgrove. The four poster bed was part of the estate of the late Lady Dunphie a direct descendant of Sir Richard Arkwright, a key figure of the Industrial Revolution who is often credited with being the creator of the modern factory system. Arkwright was knighted in 1786 and served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. In 1788 he purchased an estate from Florence Nightingale's father, William, for £20,000 and set about building Willersley Castle for himself and his family. Sir Richard died in 1792 before the building was completed. Willersley Castle was later completed and occupied by his son Richard.
The wealth of Richard Arkwright Junior was much higher than that of his father which was not only due to the textile industry. Initially developing the factory system further he later sold a number of factories and reinvested the money into real estate and banks. When he died he was estimated to be the richest man in the country.
The Arkwright family continued to occupy Willersley Castle until the estate was bought in 1927 by a group of Methodist businessmen, Much of the House contents were sold at auction at this time and the Knight Franks contents sale lists a number of similar beds:

Musical Teddy Bear

A Charming early 20th. century stuffed musical Teddy Bear, the clockwork music box plays the tune Rock a Bye Baby and still works.
The story of the Nursery Rhyme relates to a family who lived in a tree house which was formed within a massive Yew tree. The Yew Tree concerned was believed to be nearly 2000 years old. The family were charcoal burners who lived in Shining Cliff Woods, Ambergate, Derbyshire in the 1700's. The ancient occupation of Charcoal Burning would be conducted by people who actually lived in the woods. Just like this family. Their names were Kate and Luke Kennyon and they lived in what was locally called the 'Betty Kenny Tree' - a colloquialism for Kate Kenyon. The Kenyons had 8 children and a tree bough was hollowed out to act as a cradle for their children! Shining Cliff Woods was owned at the time by the Hurt family. The Kenyons were favoured by the Hurts who commissioned the artist James Ward of the Royal Academy to paint their portraits. The Yew tree still exists but was severely fire damaged by vandals in the 1930s.
