(Antiques) Ltd

W.R. Harvey & Co. (Antiques) Ltd specialise in fine English furniture, clocks, pictures, and other works of art from the period 1680 - 1830. Our firm was founded over fifty years ago by Walter Harvey who is still actively involved with the company whilst his son, David, is the Managing Director.

Whilst our main specialisation is fine English furniture of the 17th century, 18th century and early 19th century, collectors will also be pleased to know that we always have a wide range of smaller items in our showrooms. This includes china, glass, brassware, silver, pictures, paintings, engravings, boxes, snuff boxes and other small objets d'art.

Our stock covers the Stuart, Cromwellian, Carolean, Georgian and Regency periods and you will also often find pieces in Oak, Walnut, Mahogany, Satinwood and Rosewood. Some of the rarer and more exotic timbers can be found, such as Native Yew, Ash and Elm are mixed with imported Padouk, Camphor, Lignum Vitae and Kingwood.

The stock held at any time will include cabinets, bureaux, dining tables, writing tables, desks, chairs, escritoires, bookcases and secretaires all dating from between 1650 and 1850. For 50 years Harveys have been dealing in wonderful pieces of furniture and work of art from these two centuries.

There are always items there which can be traced back to the designs of William Kent, Daniel Marot, Thomas Chippendale, Robert Adam, Thomas Sheraton, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Hope.

In some instances, based on makers' labels, provenance or knowledge of particular cabinetmaking skills, Harveys are able to attribute to particular makers such as Gillows of Lancaster, Speer, Trotter, Morgan and Saunders, Bullock or Vile and Cobb.

We were initially based in Chalk Farm, London where we also had our restoration and conservation departments. We then expanded to gallery premises in Old Bond Street in order to provide an unparalleled service to our constantly expanding international clientele.

In 1996 we moved from London's Mayfair to our charming and spacious Georgian property in Witney, Oxfordshire, where we are now able to display our outstanding stock of period pieces in delightful room settings. We have also recently moved our conservation department to Witney where it is constantly supervised by David Harvey.

Please browse around our 'virtual' showrooms to glean an insight into the quality of the items we stock. If you are a collector of English antique furniture be sure to bookmark our pages in your Web browser as we change them often.

W.R. Harvey & Co. frequently participate in the major antiques exhibitions and our news page will give you further details of venues and dates. Also, as we naturally hope you will want to pay a personal visit to our showrooms, our 'Visit Witney' page shows you exactly where we are.

We are so often asked for advice on how to care for antiques that we have published our recommendations in a small Adobe Acrobat 'pdf' document. Download our file to print and keep. Our handy guide also includes the dates of the various furniture periods of England and the reigns of English sovereigns.

Finally, please do e-mail us if you have a special requirement, or if you would like to be added to our mailing list for news of our forthcoming events.

We look forward to meeting or hearing from you soon.
